We Charted Every Happy Hour in Austin. Go Out on Thursday at 5.

We track happy hour at 395 bars and restaurants across Austin, 369 of which run a real weekly happy hour schedule. Put all of those schedules on one clock and some patterns fall out that changed how we plan our own weeks. Here's what the data says.

Thursday at 5 PM is the best moment to drink cheap in Austin. At that instant, 334 happy hours are running at once — the single highest overlap of the entire week. Wednesday at 5 is a photo-finish second at 333. If you can only make one happy hour a week, make it one of those two.

Friday is secretly the worst weekday for happy hour. This one surprised us. Friday at 5 PM has 296 active happy hours — fewer than Monday's 299, and nearly 40 fewer than Thursday. It makes sense once you think like an owner: Friday evening fills itself, so why discount it? The crowd goes out Friday. The deals go out Wednesday and Thursday.

The whole week funnels into one golden hour. The most common happy hour window in Austin starts at 3 or 4 PM and dies at 6 sharp — 179 schedules end at exactly 6:00 PM, by far the most common cutoff. That means 5 to 6 PM is the hour when almost everything overlaps, and 6:01 PM is the most expensive minute of the evening. Set an alarm.

The weekend cliff is real. Saturday at 5 PM, only 117 happy hours are running — about a third of Thursday's count. Interestingly, Sunday recovers: 144 spots run some kind of Sunday happy hour versus 134 on Saturday, thanks to all-day industry days and hospitality-crowd specials. If you're choosing a weekend day to chase deals, Sunday beats Saturday.

The long tail is where the fun is. Sixty-one spots keep a happy hour going at 10 PM on at least one night — late-night happy hour is a real, findable thing here. Forty spots run windows of eight hours or longer (the "all day, every day until 7" crowd), and 83 start before 3 PM, which is either a warning sign or a lifestyle, depending on your calendar.

And the number that matters most in a city where a craft cocktail lists at $15: across all 395 spots, we count 234 separate drink deals at $5 or under. Five-dollar drinks didn't leave Austin. They just moved to a 3-to-6 window on a Wednesday.

All of this is browsable, not just readable — drag the time scrubber on the map to any moment of the week to see exactly what would be pouring. See you Thursday at 5.
